While traveling south on Highway 91 from Smithfield, Utah the other day I couldn’t help but notice the billboard’s campaign slogan that said, “You Can’t Fix Stupid Vote The Incumbents Out!” From the recent political upset in Virginia, it appears that this sentiment is clearly gaining traction all across America.
I was born shortly after Dwight D. Eisenhowser became President of the United States and have recollection of 11 different Presidents during my lifetime (Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, GHW Bush, Clinton, GW Bush & Obama), but I also recall the political environments that surrounded each of their tenures. The Korean War, South East Asia Conflicts, Civil Rights, The Bay of Pigs Invasion, The Cuban Missile Crisis, The Vietnam War, Urban Riots, Political Assignations, Israel’s Six Day War, Watergate, Assignation Attempts, Energy Crisis, Moscow Olympics Boycott, Deregulation and Inflation, Bombing of Libya, Iran-Contra, The Cold War and Fall of the Berlin Wall, Deseret Storm, The War on Drugs, Economic Recession, The Lewinsky Scandal, Impeachment, 9/11 – Terrorist Attacks, The War on Terror, TARP, The Economic Stimulus, and the promised “Hope for Change,” just to name a few.
Every political season a similar cry has emerged throughout this great land. “Throw the Bums Out!” Yet, when we do, it somehow seems that we put more back in. Is it really possible that the party who is responsible for the billboard is right – “You Can’t Fix Stupid?” Should we be looking in the mirror? – After all we voted them in.
Voting and the political process should not be about popularity or party lines, but rather about the “employment of good and worthy candidates” to represent us – the people. Whether they be an incumbent or not.
Maybe it’s time for us to be to be smart about who we elect to represent us, rather than to continue on with a wholesale attempt to correct our political voting indiscretions.
Please vote for the best qualified candidate. “O Be Wise; What Can I Say More?”
